Buildings and Grounds provides custodial and housekeeping services, grounds maintenance and landscape services, set-up and take-down of campus events including Commencement activities, Tournament Park management and Campus Recycling.
Custodial and Housekeeping Services
Responsible for routine cleaning of all academic, research and administrative buildings, including offices, classrooms, rest rooms and public corridors. Also responsible for routine cleaning of all on and off-campus undergraduate and graduate housing. Cleaning is performed daily, Monday through Friday, based on national standards and consists of rest room cleaning and restocking, trash removal, classroom cleaning, office cleaning, dusting, scrubbing, vacuuming and mopping. Shampooing of rugs and stripping and waxing of floors are scheduled annually or according to established need.
Grounds Maintenance and Landscape Operations
Responsible for planned grounds improvements and routine maintenance of outdoor spaces including pruning, fertilizing, mowing, cleaning and keeping the grounds free of litter and graffiti. Grounds employs specialists in irrigation, chemical applications and tree maintenance. The highly manicured lawns, perennial plantings and color variations that accent the planting beds throughout campus create an ambiance for weddings, receptions, and meetings. The Olive and Oak Trees are the traditional theme trees of the campus, but Camphors, Jacarandas, Tipus, and Stone Pines have been used in recent years in the landscape plan with great success.
Responsible for the set-up and take-down of campus events including Commencement activities, weddings, meetings, forums and other educational and social events. Personnel, furniture rental and janitorial services are examples of Facilities services that are provided on a chargeable basis. Requests should be received at least two weeks prior to an event.
Tournament Park is an Institute facility, available on a chargeable basis for a variety of Campus and private events. The scheduling of events is coordinated through the Buildings and Grounds Department and must be made well in advance. Recycling is provided by the Buildings & Grounds Department and recyclable materials are picked up from campus buildings on a weekly basis by recycling personnel. The Campus Recycling Center is located on Del Mar Boulevard between Michigan and Wilson Avenues. It is open for use by the campus community and the public, Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and during the weekends from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Items delivered to the Recycling Center must be sorted. Additional information can be found on our online Recycling Program page.
Building and Grounds provides pest control services on a non-chargeable basis to academic and administrative departments. The department uses all available integrated pest management strategies to prevent economically damaging pest outbreaks while reducing risks to human health and the environment.
